Sports ground shortage By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HALSWELL’S booming population is putting pressure on its sports grounds. Halswell Wigram Rugby Club, Halswell United Association Football Club and the Halswell Cricket Club need the city council to give them more land. The city council will allocate four sports fields for senior and junior sport in October to help address the problem. Two community fields will also be given to a sports club when

The city council’s head of parks Andrew Rutledge (above) said new subdivisions were not planning to include sports fields. to cope with the population expansion. It is expected the suburb will grow to 15,860 by 2043. The sport clubs’ need for more land first came to the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board in September 2014. In the past three years the Halswell Wigram Rugby Club has expanded from two to eight teams while Halswell United has grown to about 870 members. The Halswell Cricket Club which has about 75 members is

also in need of more land and is pushing for there to be a multisports club accommodating rugby league, netball, softball and cricket. “We need facilities and land to combat that growth,” cricket club captain Leighton Johnston said. Long-time Halswell league stalwart Darryl Hawker said the four playing fields the club has at Halswell Domain is sufficient – but the lack of car parking facilities is an issue.

Mr Hawker said while rugby league was supportive of the multi-club idea, others were not. In 2015, the city council granted the Halswell Wigram Rugby club two senior fields at Te Kahu Park. But the club’s chairman Alan Davidson said the current land is not enough with the suburb’s population projection. He said the club could be looking at between 10 to 12 more teams in the next five to 10 years. •Turn to page 10

As we reveal on page 3, the clinic will cater for people who have been turned down by the public health system, do not have medical insurance and can’t afford to go private for their treatment. And that I suspect means many, many people. Huge credit must go to the medical specialists who are giving their time to make sure people get treatment that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford. Free dental care scheme

Specialists give up their time to help By Julia Evans PEOPLE WHO can’t afford dental surgery will now be able to access free care. The Canterbury Charity Hospital Trust is opening two new clinics for people who have been turned down by the public health system, do not have medical insurance and can’t afford to go private for their treatment. The clinics, in Bishopdale, are the first of their kind in New Zealand. Oral surgeons and dentists approached the trust with the idea for the new surgery and offered their services. Trust fundraising coordinator Rosie Graham said the trust tries to respond to the needs of the community. Patients will be able to have sedation and procedures such as extractions and wisdom teeth removals. Previously it had only been able to offer general dental work to clients of Work and Income. Ms Graham said there is a huge need in the community for free oral surgery and extending

its practice means the hospital can go beyond the general dentistry it already offers to meet that need. The volunteer work done by more than 280 dentists, anaesthetists, councillors, technicians, support staff and the hospital’s two new oral surgeons is the reason the new clinics can open, Ms Graham said. Three denture companies have also offered their services and will be making dentures for patients on site. As well as volunteers, the hospital relies on donations from the community, local businesses and its patrons. “It’s a real community of everyone helping each other out,” Ms Graham said. The hospital had worked towards opening these clinics for more than a year and Ms Graham said it had been a drawn-out process so it’s good to see the clinics finally opening for people to get the help they need. Since opening in 2007, the hospital has also offered free

Cycleways transforming city Halswell Residents’ Association secretary David Hawke writes about positive changes in the city since the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes It has been a rather grim week, re-awakening feelings in our family last experienced after the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. So, I thought to write a positive piece looking at changes since that time. Strangely, you might think, I want to endorse the city’s driver behaviour – not toward each other, but towards people on cycles. Let me explain. I ride mine every day, rain or sun, from home in Halswell to my job at the Ara Institute of Canterbury in the central city. Being keen cycle tourists, we take our bikes and ride in many other towns around New Zealand. With remarkably rare exceptions, I find that Christchurch folk driving their cars are at the top of the heap courtesy-wise toward folk on cycles. Being a person who likes to rationalise everything, I think this is because we have such high

recreational bike use in Christchurch. Today’s car or heavy vehicle driver is the weekend’s road or mountain-bike rider. My route to work takes me along Lincoln Rd to Hagley Park, then east along the new protected cycleway on Tuam St. Returning home, I ride the new cycleway on St Asaph St. While there are certainly issues with details along these cycleways, the difference from

pre-earthquake days is totally beyond imagination. A bunch of us met during the week with city council officers (at their initiative) to identify these concerns from a cyclist perspective, with a real feeling that city council is committed to making necessary changes. And I’m really looking forward to the day when I can join up with the Quarryman’s Trail cycleway that will take me all the way to Halswell. So, in spite of the issues, I think that Christchurch is doing its best in that muddly human way to make itself the more liveable city that we all hoped for post-earthquake. As one of those drivers considerate of the folk riding cycles along city streets, take the opportunity to feel good about yourself.

Eddie Parker – I am very frustrated with the constant delays over this project. Residents of Hornby, like myself, have been waiting many years already for any real improvements to the community services and facilities at Hornby. Hornby has, and is, part of the south-west growth pattern after the Canterbury earthquakes. There have been new subdivisions and business parks that have, and will continue to increase the population, yet nothing has changed regarding facilities for at least the last 10 years. The Hub Hornby Mall has been developed, but that is a commercial undertaking. Denton Park is not well lit, there is often broken glass lying

around, some people sleep in and around the Denton Park/ Kyle Park area. It is generally an unsafe place to be in at night. There is ample space available in these to parks to accommodate the sports grounds and new facilities. Some buildings would need to be demolished and rebuilt, which is easy to do. There is also a distinct lack of playgrounds or other facilities for the children of Hornby. We need the city council to act responsibly and decisively to represent all people of Hornby including sports people but especially the residents and ratepayers. David Nesbitt – I support Mr Catchpole and his opinion that Denton Park should only be used by sports clubs. Given the parlous state of the city council finances, the only affordable option is for a swimming pool in Kyle Park.

They had their chance of putting one at Hornby behind the existing library – but they sold the land. Readers responds to Western News’ article on the proposed Lamb and Hayward facility: Chuancheong Yew – I was surprised to read the article in the Western News about building a funeral facility at 286 Halswell Junction Rd. I am a resident in the Longhurst subdivision and I have never been informed by the city council about this plan. In my opinion, the traffic is a main concern, the location is too near to Longhurst and Knight Stream Park, hence not really

News strategic. I have been struggling with traffic congestion at a roundabout on my way to work in Sockburn via Wigram Rd. The current situation will get worse when both subdivisions are sold out and fully occupied. I think the majority of Longhurst and Knights Stream Park will oppose the facility. These are solely my personal views, I don’t think this facility is beneficial for the residents. Debbie McMahon – I do think the south-west needs a new funeral facility. I don’t see what the fuss is all about because Halswell used to have a funeral home for years on the corner of Balcairn and Ensign Sts and it was never a problem. I think the proposed location is perfect. Funeral homes always look nice with attractive gardens and it’s hardly going to make a difference to traffic because Halswell Junction Rd is a busy road anyway. I’ve never heard of a noisy funeral home so I think it’s a great idea. I am also a Halswell resident. UNCERTAIN: An image of what the proposed Lamb and Hayward funeral facility could look like.

A QUIET flower-laying ceremony will be held at Avonhead Park Cemetery tomorrow to honour those who lost their lives in the February, 22, 2011, earthquake. The community will gather at the cemetery at 12.51pm to observe a minute’s silence to mark the sixth anniversary of the earthquake which killed 185 people. The minute’s silence will be followed by the flower-laying ceremony where flowers donated by Andrea’s Florist will be laid at each of the graves at the internment site. The Friends of Avonhead Cemetery trust, the Avonhead Community Group and the Sonoda Group will attend the ceremony. The Sonoda Group is a visiting group of Japanese school students from the Osaka region and has a long association with the city. The Friends of Avonhead Cemetery is a registered trust determined to bring recognition to the official interment site of the earthquake victims. “We are determined that the city should not forget where the actual remains of the earthquake victims are,” Friends of Avonhead Cemetery chairman Clive Paris said.

Congratulations on the reopening of the church – it’s been a long road getting there. It has been. It’s been virtually six years since we’ve been out and it has been a long road. There are various reasons for that. The insurance settlement took quite a long time and the first engineering proposal wasn’t used because it wasn’t up to standard. That has worked to the church’s advantage and, in some ways, it’s been good because we don’t want a sub-par building. It also took us quite a while to raise the funds necessary. Eventually, all these different strands came together and now we’re reopening. So you’ve had some long nights fundraising? Yes we did, but we have a great team at St Barnabas. Over the last three years, we’ve raised more than $50,000 a year ourselves, which doesn’t include direct donations or philanthropic funding from businesses we’ve received. We still have two other major church buildings to strengthen

and we’re up to $1.4 million of our $1.6 million target. So with $200,000 left, the fundraising is still going on. We could’ve just left the buildings at 33 per cent of the new building standard, and that would be perfectly legal, but we wanted to future proof them so we’re getting the whole church up to 67 per cent. Does the historical significance of the church make you more concerned? Definitely. Partly, we need it now as a church and community, but we are aware it is obviously a very valuable historical church for the whole city. We’ve installed a sprinkler system to protect the church in case of fire. We’re in a good position to be safe and undamaged for many years and have made sure it’s covered for whatever comes next. What does it mean for yourself to be the vicar of such a significant church? I feel it’s a humbling position that I’m in. I’ve been given this responsibility, which I know is significant and I’m happy to take

For me, it’s about being part of a team and although every team needs a leader, this is a very high functioning team and that makes my job so much easier. I certainly knew it was a very big challenge to come to St Barnabas and be the vicar because it is a significant, large and diverse church, so there have been opportunities that have gone along with that. My wife and I were privileged enough to go to the Holy Land. That helped my work tremendously. Tell me about your trip to the Holy Land. the Holy Land and marriage Our three-week journey took us to Jerusalem to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Christians believe Jesus was buried and resurrected, and, of course, the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. It sounds like a pretty significant trip. How much did it inspire you? It helped me connect personally with the culture and land where Jesus lived and grew up. Once you’ve been there and seen it for yourself, you have a much better idea of the significance of that place. It’s strengthened my faith and the way I can teach the culture to others because I’ve seen it first-hand. For example, we spent time at the Temple Mount where the Jewish temple was. There’s a Muslim mosque and another Muslim building there now, but it’s about just being where Jesus once taught. You get the feeling that you’re part of history because you were there and you’ve seen it. You say you went with your wife – how much of an influence does family have on your life too? They’re a big part of my life and work. My children are all

adults now. Three of them are married and I have a grandson and one on the way. They’re all very supportive of me and one of my sons is very involved in the church. My wife is also involved and very supportive. It’s a bit of a family affair. Was being a vicar always something you wanted to be, or did you come to it later in life? I did grow up with a Christian family and embraced the faith from a young age, but I started my career as an engineer and it was when I was 31 that I was ordained as an Anglican priest. I felt a call from God, I felt strongly that this is what I should do with my life, and I felt it was a very clear-cut decision to say yes to God, so I did. It has become a very important principle of mine, saying yes to God. An engineer! Has becoming a vicar and leaving that career been worthwhile? It’s been incredible for a whole range of reasons. We teach english to refugees, we have play groups for toddlers with music sessions, youth and young adult groups and friendship groups to support older people. We also help support youth workers at our local high school who do an incredible job helping with classroom care for vulnerable students. It’s not like we have a big strategic plan; it’s very organic. Our faith is not a static set of beliefs that we can tick off, it helps us be better people and continue to do better work in the community. Sounds like the church is going to be busy, where do you see your future role? We’ve got a big transition we’re moving through and I’m sure that more couples will come to us for marriage and more funerals will be held here, so my immediate goal is to manage the church through the transition. I’ve still got two more buildings to see repaired and that will go on for at least two more years. I a.m. hope I’ll still be around for that.

Girls get colourful for Villa Maria sport day Georgia O’Connor-Harding A RAINBOW of colours were on show at Villa Maria College when students got stuck into its annual house sports day. Gumboot throwing and sack racing were some of the activities students took part in at the recent event. As part of the competition, they also dressed up in bright colours to represent their school house. Every student who starts at the school is placed into one of six houses – Boradie, orange Claver, purple; Ennis, green; Grace, blue; McAuley, yellow; and Mercy, red. Students earned points for their

house during the competition. Points are currently being tallied with the sports day champion expected to be announced at the school’s assembly today. Villa Maria College development officer Judi Wilson said it was a day of fun and laughter with a focus on getting students to mix and get to know each other. Principal Deborah Brosnahan said it was fantastic to see the students working together to create a sense of belonging. “Girls are very proud of their houses and the friendly competitions we run throughout the year are strongly contested,” she said.

The Halswell Community Project is planning to co-ordinate a party out of appreciation for both the emergency services and community. Adapted Yoga and Pilates, the Halswell Drama Group and residents have expressed interest in contributing to the party. The idea was first posted on the Halswell Community Group Facebook Page by resident Stacey Armishaw. Halswell Community Project chairwoman Chrys Horn said it is a great idea but a date and place is still yet to be confirmed. “They (the emergency services) have been really good, they honestly have. There have been some very grumpy people at the cordons and the police up there have been

Boys’ High dominate By Gordon Findlater CHRISTCHURCH BOYS’ High School dominated the Metro Cricket annual youth awards ceremony at St Andrew’s College on Wednesday night. CBHS year 9 students Zak Foulkes, Nick Cooke, Ollie Curtis and Riley Butt all picked up individual awards. The city’s top young players were recognised for their efforts over the past year and competition-winning teams received their trophies. CBHS also represented Canterbury on the national stage, winning the recent Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup at Lincoln University. On top of the four individual awards they also collected four team trophy’s at the ceremony. Canterbury and former New Zealand age group player Theo van Woerkom was on hand to present the awards. Mrs Bunn said the club’s main priority is improving the land and would like to get better floodlights.

A train carrying more than $400,000 of Countdown products was trapped on damaged rail lines after the November 14, 2016, Kaikoura earthquake. Most non-perishables have been retrieved and were donated to the Kaikoura community. However, Countdown also donated more than 20 pallets of groceries to three Christchurch organisations – 0800 Hungry, Salvation Army and the City Mission. The goods were handed over last week. Riccarton move a step closer to national cup competition By Gordon Findlater RICCARTON HIGH School’s first XI have won a national cup preliminary tournament at Hagley Park. They met St Thomas of Canterbury College in last week’s final of the Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup preliminary tournament, accounting for their neighbour’s by six wickets. The win was a true team effort. Riccarton’s bowlers restricted St Thomas to 104/9 before the batsmen reached the total in the 17th over. The top order all chimed in with Tim Bridgman (37), Jessy Daly (28) and Jonty Hunter (23) making inroads. The win confirmed Riccarton’s spot in the main draw of the regional first XI Cup tournament. They will enter the eight strong tournament as the sixth seed and join Christchurch Boys’ High School, St Andrew’s College, Christ’s College, St Bede’s College and Shirley Boys’ High School. The two remaining spots are yet to be decided. The winner of the regional competition will represent Canterbury at the Secondary School Boys’ First XI Cup at Lincoln University in December. Riccarton went undefeated through three rounds of play at last week’s tournament, defeating

At the end of the day Halswell were 149-4 after 34 overs, needing 107 runs from 16 overs for crucial first innings points. Heathcote won the toss and batted first after a delayed start due to morning rain. Whichever side finished ahead after the first innings would secure two competition points and with the delayed start, this could be important with less chance of an outright result. Halswell took a wicket in the first over, and then again in the seventh over to have Heathcote wobbling at 25/2. However, Heathcote then produced a 100-run partnership to put them on the front foot with the score 125/2 and 23 overs left in the first innings. Halswell worked hard and after the 50 overs were up, Heathcote had scored 256/6 with Matt Mealings finishing on 120 not out. Hip pain: Do I have arthritis or could it be mainly my muscles?

he team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and senior clients visit complaining of pain in one or both hips. Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests that a major part of the pain could be due to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis. “Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason for the pain may be the muscles around the joint,” she explains. Alternatively, a back muscle could also be the cause, as shown in the image. Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year old client with severe arthritis who walked with a stick, told her, “I will end up in a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight through my right leg due to pain in my hip and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she was walking with her stick but without the severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was one of the factors that made her muscles spasm but the other was that older people move less and the flexed position the hip is in when we sit is particularly bad for the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that although the client was 89 and could have been “given up on” or told to live with the pain, she made a difference to her health and wellbeing. At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques (massage and triggerpoint deactivation techniques) are used to release the muscles.

The client also gets a home exercise program designed to mobilize and stretch the hip, strengthen the important core muscles and increase general strength and balance. They teach a movement sequence that stretches the hip in all directions whilst the client is able to lie safely on their bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients. In many cases having the muscles released and being taught how to maintain

it, is enough to stay on top of the problem. If severe arthritis is the underlying cause, some maintenance therapy may be necessary, but that is often more affordable and, for older patients, better tolerated than surgery.
